Welcome to The Lodge: Meet the Alperns

March 30, 2021

Dr. Jerry and Carol Alpern are a Colorado-based couple joining our new community, Sopris Lodge at Carbondale. We look forward to welcoming these early depositors and Signature Club members to their new home soon.

Future Sopris Lodge at Carbondale residents and longtime Coloradans, Dr. Jerry and Carol Alpern, joyfully moved to Aspen in 1976. Jerry, who had been a professor of psychology at Indiana University Medical School, began his 35-year clinical practice there, and artist Carol opened her studio/gallery in the Hotel Jerome.

The couple, who have been married for 55 years, raised two sons, Tom and Tyler, and later helped raise two grandkids in Aspen. Tom continues to live in Aspen while Tyler teaches art at the University of Colorado. After Jerry retired at age 85, the couple traveled to New Zealand and other countries and eventually moved to Carbondale’s Blue Creek Ranch neighborhood.

“Carbondale is a wonderful, friendly, and happy little town,” said Jerry. “There’s a great health club, a theater, and it is a very community-minded town. They have First Fridays every month where people come to visit the art studios, bars, and many local establishments. I think it’s a terrific place to live.”

Jerry is a Korean war veteran and published author. His most recent book is titled Vets for Vets: Harnessing the Power of Vets to Heal. He also volunteers his professional experiences with Huts for Vets, an organization that hosts veterans and active-duty service members with post-traumatic stress disorder on weekend wilderness trips.

Carol’s memory problems led the couple to seek a quality community where they can live together. After hearing about Sopris Lodge at an Alzheimer’s support meeting, Jerry found that it fit the bill perfectly.

Carol and Jerry look forward to forming new friendships at Sopris Lodge and are committed to playing an active role in helping it become a great retirement community in the Roaring Fork Valley. They are also delighted to experience the maintenance-free lifestyle a senior living community affords.
